  1. Sweden's death total, as of Sept. 22, 2020 is way higher than its neighbors Denmark, Finland, and Norway. It is true that Sweden, with a population of just over 10 million is larger than its neighbors. The other three each have populations of about 5.5 million. So Sweden is about twice as large as each of them. However, Sweden's death total is 5,876 as of Sept. 22. That is 9.3 times as many deaths as Denmark (643 dead), 17.13 times as many as Finland (343 dead) and a whopping 22 times as many as Norway (267). I would call Sweden's record a pretty miserable one, compared to its neighbors. https://www.statista.com/statistics/1113834/cumulative-coronavirus-deaths-in-the-nordics/

  3. We have lived in Ajijic for almost 14 years. For the first 10 years or so, we depended upon ATMs to access our money in our NOB account. Ultimately, we found that having a Mexican bank account gave us better access to the pesos we needed. This was particularly so after we bought a house that needed occasional repairs and when we needed substantial sums to buy a car, pay medical bills, etc. Many times, the amounts needed were greater than you could get from an ATM, unless you went back repeatedly over a period of time. Over those first 10 years exclusively using ATMs, we did encounter a number of problems with them. Sometimes our usual ATM would be inoperable for some reason. We would then have to scramble to locate one that was functional, often at an inconvenient time, such as just before departure on a trip. We discovered that trying to access funds on certain days (particularly during fiestas) sometimes resulted in a message on the screen that the ATM was out of money. When we couldn't get an ATM to operate properly, we would always return home to check our US account online. Sometmes we would discover that the funds we had asked for had been withdrawn, even though we had an ATM receipt that said zero funds withdrawn. The local bank with the problem ATM never takes responsibility and always refers you back to your US bank. This meant we would have to go through voice-mail hell to get through, and then fight with them to put the money back. Ultimately, It made sense to have an account in a local bank where we can access pesos in the amount we need, while dealing with actual human beings, rather than a machine. Others may have different experiences or opinions, these are mine.

  4. In defense of crabby boy, I can see where he is coming from. Although he should have known posting the unmasked photo would create a stir among at least a couple of regular posters, he did explain masks were removed for the photo. He has made clear (twice) that the facility complies with virus protocols. There is no need to pound this restaurant into the ground.

  7. Even before Covid, I prefer dealing with machines! We've lived here a total of 11 years and owned 2 homes and did substantial renovations to each of them, as well as furnishing them. We have yet to open a MX bank account. To us it's a matter of simplification....the fewer financial accounts we need to deal with, the better. Our Schwab account allows for zero ATM fees worldwide. When we lived here 2008-2012 we never used a credit card because MX hadn't yet embraced Chip technology. Well, now they do and we use credit cards for many purchases resulting in a lot of airline miles and fewer ATM visits. I agree with @cookj5 that we all have different experiences and different comfort levels.

  8. Every day is a different saint´s day.. so it is easy not to know.. My saint´s day is in July but growing up it was on the 8th or october... so it can be a little confusing if you do not have a calender with the saints showing up on the days...In France your saint´s day in important and we used to celebrate the saint days at the same level as the birthday and in Greece the saint´s day is even more important.. in Mexico the saints of the barrios are important but each person´s individual day is not so important... differnt places different customs..

  10. Pancho's emporium is the single best thing that has happened in Lakeside in years. Great food, great variety, great staff and a "go to necessity" for the best all round grocery and beverage selection anywhere. He's put himself on the line and in difficult times he's doing all of us a service. Yes, there are wrinkles along the way for any new business and not every day is filled with perfection........but take a good look. Pancho's will, with very little doubt, be around a long, long time.....and he has a son who'll likely take over when Pancho gets a little tired!

  14. Treat all the restaurants equally by posting this on all the restaurant reviews on here so that you can put them all out of business. Your 2 ongoing posts about covid-19 isn't enough of an obsession for you that you have to do this to a restaurant? And unlike a lot of you we only go to restaurants on special occasions. Last time was Dec. 2019. we both enjoy cooking exquisite meals at home.

  16. My experience with getting a stent there was similar. Plus, I was so over-anesthetized that I literally went nuts afterwards and the doctor had me sent home the same evening. I didn't even recognize my husband and was "out of it" for several days. The place is run down and understaffed, as suggested above. No more.

  20. Get a grip. They only took the masks off for the foto and none of them sneezed on us during that short time. We do not throw caution to the wind or I would not still be alive as the FRAIL ONE. Yvonne is far from being frail at the YOUNG age of 70. Amador[black sabbath hat] is the owner not staff and Never goes without a mask wherever he is, in front of Pancho's doing his smoke thing on Saturdays or delivering to your house. But feel free to stay away based on your viewing of a couple of fotos.SNORK! pedro kertesz

  21. I agree with the need for a local bank. So much more convenient! Relying on ATM not a good idea and limits on how much cash you can get, then the problems with the machines....just not worth it. Better to spend the time going through the process of opening a local account. Dealing with live person is better.

  22. It probably would. However, that is not the only statistic to watch. Hospitalization utilization and deaths from covid-19 are probably a better indicator of what is going on than reported infections, given the disparity in testing.

  24. If you pay by the job or pay by the hour should make no difference on what you are willing to accept. You are the boss. You are in charge. All my Mexican relatives pay by the job. They dictate the requirements of the job. None of the help cuts corners .. Why They want to keep their jobs. If anything they work longer hours so the bosses are happy.

  25. Still not sure why any expat needs to bank in Mexico. It is easy to access funds in foreign (non-Mexican) banks from here using ATMs. Any type of check could be deposited in US bank and accessed from here. What kinds of problems or issues are folks dealing with that require local bank accounts? Somebody please explain by example. I guess there might be a one time need for a particular event but once that is done just ignore the Mexican bank and either close the account or leave the minimum balance to avoid fees. Alan

  26. My personal experience . Flew recently to US east coast and most pleasant trip since before 9/11 . Airports super clean and quiet and calm. no crowds/no rushing, no lines anywhere, super easy immigration experience . Everyone — 100% - masked , social distancing observed and everyone super chill. I fly a few times/year ...If only it was always like this

  27. Medicare Advantage policies in the US are mostly of the HMO type although a few can also be PPO. They are also very location centric meaning they cover a finite 'location' where they will cover Docs, Hospitals, Services and maybe Medicines. For example mine covers me 'only' within a few.... probably 25.... sq miles of my home where I have a specific PCP who can also refer me to an in-service specialist/service. Not state-wide and surely not out of the country! Advantage policies in less populated areas can cover as much as a state. An Advantage policy WILL cover one for 'emergencies only' while traveling or on vacation out of your home jurisdiction, mostly out of pocket and on a reimbursement basis. You have suggested that you are 'moving to Jalisco', not vacationing there. Traditional Medicare and a Medicare Gap policy, as well as Advantage policies, do NOT cover one in a general sense.... as in living/staying..... out of the United States and surely not IN MEXICO! Others here may/will chime in to discuss what LMG may or may not be doing in this respect but whatever they are doing, if not for emergencies only while on 'vacation', can be considered Medicare Fraud. YMMV

  29. Out running errands this morning and decided to throw all caution to the winds by having breakfast at Pancho’s. It (and the store) were busy. Service was good. Protocols being followed. I had the everything omelette which came with beans and a small fruit plate. It was excellent. It has been many months since I had eaten there and was pleased that everything seemed fine (at least for today).

  31. I had been going to a certain clinic for years and they recently told me that my U.S. insurance was no longer paying for my office visits because the visits were no longer connected to my surgery. What one has to do with another I do not know? They would no longer see me for any visits. Shortly thereafter, I received a call from my insurance's fraud investigation department saying that they were investigating the clinic. Apparently, the clinic was charging my U.S. insurance company $450 USD for office visits, which is usually MUCH less in Mexico. They also charged them $45,000 USD for a surgery that they arranged, which really only cost $15,000 USD, a $30,000 mark up. The insurance company was also under the impression that the surgery and office visits were being done in the U.S. and not Mexico. They do not pay for office visits or surgery in Mexico unless it is an emergency, which they were was not. I had no idea this was going on. Fortunately, I am not being held responsible for any of the fraudulent charges. On an added note, if you do a Google search on a doctor that runs a clinic, you can find out his previous criminal background in the U.S. This may help you figure out what they are up to.

  34. Just another CDC update and it would be really a treat if you took your unpleasantness elsewhere and not try to sink one restaurant which follows proper protocols and procedures when SERVING it's patrons including social distancing[tables]. Post your obsession elsewhere like in your 2 covid-19 threads or start another, unless you like being mean spirited.

  35. @happyjillin You posted the pictures of unmasked workers. I posted a CDC study. You and others can ignore mask wearing if you choose to. I prefer to follow recommendations of the CDC and other scientists. FYI, I am getting take-away 6 or 7 days a week from restaurants where I have observed strict mask wearing and adherence to other sanitary requirements. And yes, if I observe non-mask wearing at eateries, they get dropped from my ordering list.

  38. I just bought a car last year after living here for 12 years without a car - just walking, riding the bus, and an occasional ride. I'm in culture shock at driving again but especially in Mexico!! These new highway "upgrades" are a disaster, the work could have been organized much better. It seems like the carretera was redone with the priority of putting in bike lanes. Generally a good idea, but with space limitations here it has become much less safe for cars. The intersection IFO walmart is now treacherous! I got caught in the left turn lane to go up the libramiento and noticed that the corners are now so sharp that vehicles coming down must almost stop to make the turn safely. Nobody is used to this! It's crazy with huge trucks coming down the road. One was headed right towards me! Scary! I hear from a local business owner that there have been a lot of wrecks recently there. Cuidado!!!

  39. I also had terrible experience at Pancho's. Was there one evening by myself and ordered a salad. I was the only customer. Salad never came. After about thirty minutes, I just left. Another time, I was there with friends for their steak dinner and it was terrible.
