Every time the subject of CH comes up so many that do not live here seem to know it all. We have lived here for almost 10 years and would not change for anything. We originally bought and lived in Ajijic and it was not for us, talk about rules or regulations not being adhered to! Talk to the people that do live here and have for years. Mosquitoes, we had more when we lived NOB. If you are looking to live in an area that is for the most quiet and want a country feel, then this is it. You will have your occasional Mexican party with music but believe me nothing like they have in either town. Dogs, yes, you will hear dogs at times, like widesky said above. When we have an issue we speak to our Security-Maintenance person (who lives here) and he is pretty good at getting it settled. Break-ins, sure we have had some just like the other towns. We have never had one but we practice common sense security. Do we feel secure here, yes. Would I walk around at night, yes. If you are really interested, then please come out here for yourself, stop at the office and speak to our office Manager, ride around and talk to us, the people that do live here. Good luck.

Yes, you will. And most people recommend Dra. Claudia Camacho who is currently on maternity leave. But, it will take you that long to get in to see her anyway. For the record, I have two friends close to Joco and they have both had cataract surgery with her. Excellent results and no problems. Dra. Claudia helped another friend who is a snowbird that had a bad cataract surgery with another opthamologist here. As for me, she is watching a small cataract in my right eye until it gets obnoxious enough to cause me a problem. In other words, she will try and avoid doing the surgery until necessary. How refreshing is that?

Sometimes you feel like you are navigating a parking lot on Madero.

I too live downtown Chapala and feel they are NOT enforcing the no double parking law...just came home...a mess all along Madero.

When the law is not enforced you complain, now they are enforcing it and, surprise, you are cynical once again. It should make you happy they are enforcing the law and getting the revenue, which may possibly mean improved services down the road. Don't worry, be happy. Perhaps the trucks and scooters will be next, although I have seen them impounding motorcycles and scooters.

Whenever someone mentions mushrooms, I think of the story of the German family who went into the forest to collect truffles. As they were preparing a meal at home with their truffles they gave some to their cat. When they sat down to eat, the cat leapt up ran around the dining room several times screeching in pain and then collapsed. The family immediately rushed to the hospital and all had their stomachs pumped. Upon returning home, they found the cat with a litter of new born kittens under the dining room table.

If I remember the law correctly it is allowed to have people in the back of a pickup (remember large families) but it is not legal for them to be standing.

Chapala Haciendas, lacking a concession from the Town or Municipality (I don't know which) of Chapala, has no authority to enforce the bylaws. Until such time as one is secured, and as always, caveat emptor. We've lived in the Haciendas for 5 years now and have never regretted the decision to buy here.

I can't dispute your second sentence (walk, don't drive); Dog hoarders/collectors/rescuers - yes there are at least two houses that have an excess of dogs (15+) but the dogs generally don't bark all the time. Sometimes the dog telegraph operates but that is usually a indicator of cows, horses or someone walking around at night. Arroyo being a mosquito haven - up until the last 2-3 weeks the arroyo has been dry, very little standing water and although it may not appear to move, it does. XENA - "The fracc’s codes say no more than five dogs per house" ; when the fracc by-laws were amended two years ago I tried to get a limit put on the # of dogs but this was denied so not sure where you are getting your info from.

As a FL homeowner, I can confirm they are called "cages." Why don't they cage swimming pools here: I would guess the bug population in FL is about 100 fold what it is here. I have not been bitten this year and I spend most of the day outdoors; I do avoid walking on the lawn in the summer as that's where I have noticed them and been bitten in the past. Why no aluminum screened terraces here.....the local tradition is heavy metal. Our terraza is screened on two sides with ironwork and a rather heavy screening material. There are decorative features to break the monotony of the screening, vines, leaves, a few hidden birds. OP...have you gotten an estimate from an ironworker? Often it is cheaper to go with local materials and workers rather than try to find something that isn't normally used here.

And what about all those folks barrelling down the highway with their kids in the back of the pick-up truck? That one always blows my mind. If they're on holiday and have a bunch of luggage with them, they put the luggage up by the cab and leave the kids sitting right by the back truck gate, so they'll be the first to go if they get rear-ended. I understand that a lot of people can't afford a vehicle with seats for all, but you'd think it would occur to them to at least pile the luggage at the very back to protect the kids.

Just pointing out this is an easy target for revenue enhancement. I'm cynical in general about what traffic enforcement has become in a lot of places. It really is about extracting money from the public a great deal more than any real concern for your safety. Of course it is a lot harder to catch red light and stop sign runners, speeders and drunks than it is to stand on a corner and wave people over for ticket writing. But who do you think is a greater danger to other motorists and pedestrians? Those who are so naive to think these cops are the least concerned about your safety, enjoy the illusion. BTW no one including me rides in our car unbuckled.

Frequently is: at least once a week. Very little mail is: less than 3 envelopes a week...on average. We are a small group that uses the mailbox as an "address" for banks and government mail rather than for general mail.

They are all over Chapala every day. Since they started Madero has far less double parking ,for example, than when it was the state transitos They removed chairs,boxes,etc. long ago. I actually live in Chapala and generally my eyes are open when I roam about.

When someone complains about getting a ticket for a seat belt violation, one can safely assume they have never been in a head-on collision. I was and the seatbelt saved my life. It was me in a Toyota Tercel against a late 1970s Volvo wagon (famous for being built like a tank) on a limited access highway. I fasten my seatbelt before I turn the ignition key.

They could remove the bike lane there that doesn't care it's fair share of traffic and add a left turn lane. We know the taxis and police will never stop doing that left turn.

They are also going to start ticketing drivers talking on cell phone, while driving, so be careful...

Good question . I addressed this in a post a while ago. There are 3 levels recognized with certification . Nurse aide, general nurse and licensed registered nurse. Oh yes! # 4 Nurse aides who grandfather themselves in as nurse aides because they took care of a relative.

No need to be careful, just buckle up every time you drive. Glad you got caught and learned a lesson.

As I've said before, sometimes when we stray off the thread, I find the material quite interesting. Just like the movie, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. I like to read all the reviews so I can learn what to expect. So far this restaurant is a 50/50 proposition of whether I will eat there or not.

We gave it two tries, sampling four different entrees and disliked all four. We left most of what we were served for the flies on both visits, who owing to numbers probably cleaned the plates before they were bussed. I would rather pay $40 pesos to stuff myself at my favorite Chapala taco stand, $53 if I grab a cold Corona at the abarrote across the street and return the bottle after drinking.
