  1. Sue Garn - Why would you care why she wants to know??? That type of comment and attitude are why a lot of folks are reluctant to post questions on this forum!

  2. Spoke with Pancho on Friday. Lots of new items coming in the next couple weeks, including Pillsbury refrig biscuits and Tillamook cheese. There is Fortuna beer on tap and a nice patio. He said he went to a big food show in Mexico City and hooked up with a number of new distributers.

  3. Having partaken of Panino's Holiday Turkey in the past and Manix' Canadian Thanksgiving a few weeks ago, I think I can safely say that Manix' is much better. Better stuffing, better gravy, better veg and moister turkey.

  4. The topic of police here is complicated. I'll try to explain briefly. Traffic police--white trucks with vialidad painted on . These are state employees and the municipality has no control over them. Good news they have a new commandante who is tough, Community Liaison, Hector Espana Ramos talked to him the other day. Their office is on Degollado in Chapala. Hector discussed the two way streets in Ajijic with parking which with the increased traffic are becoming more and more dangerous. He also discussed the mordida hound El Gordo. The commandante said he can not make any changes until the state government changes in January. Until then: If you are stopped and did something wrong simply ask for the folio. If the officer is reluctant to give you the ticket or threatens to take your car, ask to see his ID take a foto of it,not him. Also take a foto of the truck plate. Make sure all your papers are in order and in one place for ready production. The Guad Reporter listed them several weeks back. Being IDed should back him off. If he threatens to call a tow truck or does, ask to talk to the commandante (765-4747). We've talked to the #2 municipal police and explained the problem . He said Transito can only operate west of the Ajijic panteon and on the libramento to the state highway. If you have a problem within the villages , call the municipal police for assistance (765-4444) or 911. They will help you. Municipal police, numbers above, can only help with prevention. They can stop a crime in progress. After the fact, you need to go to ministerio publico to file a report. Their office is across from Christina Park in Chapala 766-2415. They have investigators. Chapala got a several million peso federal grant to establish a MUNICIPAL transito. There has been a holdup with their ability to issue tickets, so, they are basically limited to directing traffic. So you see we have lots of police, but, their powers are limited to specific areas of operation. The thing they need most is information. If you are reluctant to be IDed pm Hector at espaneramoshector@yahoo.com or me here. BTW we toured the police station in Chapala the other day and it is a mess. They have painted their armory and somme outside courtyard. But, there is peeling paint everywhere. Chapala Sunrise Rotary and Ajijic Rotary donated 15 gallons of paint. I may be getting some photos to share. A couple of things"our" cops need is a sheet of 4x8 plywood to use as a modesty panel for their business administrator's desk and a working refrigerator. They have three, I donated one to the last admin, nonworking.

  8. The lake is surprising. If you look at a lake that size in British Columbia it would probably be 400 or 500 feet deep but Chapala is only about 30 feet deep. It took me awhile to figure out what river is what at Ocotlan as it is quite confusing from the ground.

  11. Actually, I think TS Vincente is more likely to bring you problems, both could add to our current flooding in TX.

  12. The lake has not sent water to the Rio Santiago in about 40 years. Look at the area at Google earth and you will see that the water under the two bridges that you drive over in Ocotlan does not come from the lake but from a river that comes from north east of Ocotlan (I can't remember the name of that river at the moment-Zula?). A cota of 97 is needed for water to flow out of the lake (this last happened in 1977). The current lake level is about 96.45. The Lerma river passes through La Barca but enters the lake about 15 kilometers west south west of La Barca. The lake level is only crudely controlled by opening or closing dams on the Lerma river (the main river that flows into the lake). There is a dam on the lake outlet but lake water hasn't reached it in years.

  14. Versus $2.35 a gallon in Texas. Having the state "provide" energy in Mexico is pretty costly isn't it? Hey all that theft and corruption by Pemex employees and their cartel friends ain't cheap ya know.

  15. Thank you Oregonto chapala. I think my mistake was to initiate two processes at once. I asked for address change from USA address to my address here. This initiated more forms. The cancellation of medicare Part B only required one form and the copy of the passport. So I recommend anyone needing to do processes thru internet in gdl, just do one at a time, because if they need more info, then they will hold up ALL processes waiting for the info. this is where i went wrong. i just submitted the last bundle of paperwork friday night, don't know if this will satisfy them. Intercasa is right, when you are working and collecting social security if you make over the limit which is around 17,000 dollars a year it goes against your social security check. I don't come close to that kind of money, nor the limit on tax filing. Here's the bottom line, because I wanted to change my address to am mexican one, that called for the form 21. then i answered that i was working. that called for an added form 1763. It all just made me crazy but it is all submitted now, so we'll see. Kyle, I don't remember opting in to medicare part B. But maybe I did two years ago when i initially started the SS before I can back here. I think they automatically start it unless you made the effort tom opt out before 65. I just didn't think about that. Those of you who wrote to say i should be canadian or something, the banter does not belong on this thread and has nothing to do with the nature of my question. thanks to all others who answered the OP properly. 16. Does anyone know someone in Mezala who spoke their language? Heard no one speak an indigenous language there. My experience ewth indigenous is that they accept you as long as you follow their ways and their customs if not you have no business being there. Not all indigenous speak poor Spanish, there many indigenos villages where the originllanguage is lost but people continue following the old customs and laws.

  20. Some builders do. My current house is 20 years old and has a stack. The house we built in San Pancho in 2004 also had a stack. The stack not only vents but helps with flushing properly. And the force of the flush helps to move things along the pipe.

If you choose a specific site for your VPN service from them the address is basically static. I use New Jersey 2 for Netflix but it wont work for Amazon and then I pick another site for Amazon. PM me if you have any questions.

  26. Well, after installing Strong VPN Amazon still wont play the movie due to location. After reporting the problem to Strong, they replied : Amazon has rolled out a new design for specific customers that prevents playback on the VPN. Our engineers are working on finding a solution for this but we do not have an ETA at the moment. This is what the new design looks like: https://i.imgur.com/ITIa6HB.png If you have this design, Amazon will not work on any of our servers. Only browsers are affected by this (i.e Chrome/FireFox/etc) and devices should still work as per usual (such as firesticks/tv's/etc) In the meantime, you may use any non-browser device normally with Amazon Prime video, or ask their support to roll your design back. They may not honor your request though. It is recommended that you do not mention the use of a VPN/proxy if you inquire about the design rollback. So, for now, Amazon will not work on the PC using the browser

  28. i'LL TALK TO hECTOR TODAY ABOUT THE TRANSITOS WORKING THE carretera.. I'll be out of town until the 28th. I saw that the sanitation in the cells was like an old fashioned out house. I don't see that changing. I was happy to see there was at least a cover. The ladies cell was the cleanest and had a private commode (hole). Try not to be a resident.

  29. The Tansito police are operating all along the carretera, not just west of the panteon, becuase I've seen them handling accidents, towing illegal quads and golf carts, and doing other traffic stops. So it seems to me that somebody is either misinformed, lying, or committing crimes while in uniform. Can you please clarify for us, Harry? I'd suggest to folks to read Spencer's recent post about Jalisco traffic regulations. It might save you some grief. Also, remember, laws are one thing and law enforcement is another. Don't assume anybody is going to obey the rules or enforce infractions. Harry, thanks for all you do. Alan

  30. Jocotopec municipality would be a good place to start. It covers west and some south side of the lake. Jocotopec the village has good shopping and restaurants and medical care. Lots of small villages. Lots of rural areas with homes on small acreages - many of whom have Internet.

  31. As I understand it you are looking for a plot of land where you can live and later build other houses for your children. Chapala Haciendas is a development with houses and lots it is not for you. I have a farm/ranch in Oklahoma and love the country life. Unless you have a lot of money to spend on land on the north side than the south side is for you. You can buy land very reasonable there and get a great view of the lake. If you have a family emergency the road is very good from there to Guadalajara. I was in San Luis Soyatlan today and wish I had bought there instead of on the North side. If you are learning a little Spanish the people are friendly and you won't have a problem. Some of the people here on the North side think they are better than the Mexican's and this is causing a few problems. Would like to meet you but unfortunately we are going back to Oklahoma for the winter. The cows are a calling.

  35. Here is a blog by a young Mexican photographer. Some very good comments here. It takes a rather special person to move to one of these pueblos, these were the types of expats who first moved to Ajijic a long time ago. Immersion Spanish and an academic grade tutor for two days a week will take you fluent within six months. Life is good in these places - can walk to everything, usuallly social, and very safe. Then a funny thing happens. You become at one with the community, the heartbeat, and no longer crave the attention of fellow gringos, in fact, maybe even avoid it. I have seen gringos actually cringe when a tourist thinks they have uncovered one - "HEY, Hey, you, where are you from? Canada! I'll be dammed, how did a Canadian find themselves down here! - etc, etc, drawing a polite crowd. Many, just pretend they don't speak English. Many Mexicans do the same. Gringos assume they are Spanish speakers (which of course they are) and practise their Spanglish on them, only to find, as they open up, that the person they assumed was uniligual, uneducated Spanish, was actually an academic for many years in Canada or the U.S.A.. Food for thought. http://fulanitoviajero.com/11-municipios-impresionantes-de-jalisco-que-pocos-jaliscienses-conocen/

  38. Another approach that won't put a roof over your head immediately but which should guarantee the ability to build to your own preferences at any time, or not (and factoring in any intervening personal or neighborhood enhancements or catastrophes, should they occur) is to purchase an easily buildable lot. If you don't overpay, you are 'vested' in local RE values and taxes are next to nil; imho, such maximum optionality is a kind of luxury in itself. After systematic research online, a couple of years ago for the price of a good used car I bought a tiny lot at the top of the hill west of the Raquet Club in a non-frac subdivision with underground utilities that is developing at a surprising rate, with mainly middle-class Mexican ownership. The hill is so steep that a splendid view of the lake should never be occluded (a key consideration, having grown up in the Berkeley hills - is it widely recognized that the profile of Mt. Garcia is indistinguishable from that of Mt. Tam?) , and I will defer any final commitment to build until serious internet services are stable. I have been stocking up on pesos when the exchange rate is favorable, so am earning twice the US savings rate and waiting to see how the neighborhood evolves, the house having been paid for already, so to speak.

  39. When I moved here ten years ago, people were complaining that it wasn't like it was twenty years before. Now, with the gentrification of certain areas, it's not like it was ten years ago. The people this is hard on are the renters. If you are able and willing to buy, you can enjoy the place in the present and not be overly concerned about increase or decrease in value in the future.
    1 point
  40. I see lots of contributors want to base the prices on when they bought and that is fair, what will the market do? Anybody's guess. I feel there is value in owning a home and being where I want to be, if I loose money in the end I have to look at what I gained in exchange and if that's a rich relaxed lifestyle with less stress and more sunshine, I would have to say I am willing to take that deal. it seems that some of the people who have lived lakeside preferred it when there were less people but for me I have only seen it's it is today. It is still wonderful.

  41. It also has a lot to do with people not understanding the care and feeding of the septic tank. I won't take away from the OP but it's easy to find out on google. "Though things that are flushed are often hush hushed, It's important that you should know In the city, you're not, when you sit on the pot Lest you block what is known as the flow. Foreign things at a junction, often cause a malfunction If the contents aren't bodily made. And, while you seek relief, you'll cause nothing but grief And the management's lengthy tirade."

  42. Ok, on March 2nd 2018, I paid 18.38 pesos a liter of Magna (regular) at the Pemex on the libriamento just before the centro Laguna. On March 6th, 2017 I paid 16.45 pesos the liter of same. On march 2nd, 2016 I paid 13.16 pesos the liter of same. Yes I keep a little note book in my car, but its mainly to keep a check on my fuel consumption. It still blows my mind that the gas price increase had not slowed anyone down !
    1 point
  43. So looking at the difference between the highest, 16.70, and the lowest, 16.52 we are talking about barely a penny a liter. At $.04 a gallon I certainly won't be driving out of my way looking for the cheapest gas. I'm going to be driving up to the states in a couple of months and it will be interesting to see how the rest of Mexico is doing.

  46. It was so high some years ago, according to one old timer, that the former Posada (now Isabel) was flooded inside and people had to wade to the bar. In 2010, it flooded the Ajijic Malecon and the park as well as the parking lot. The new Malecon was built later. It's high, but it's been higher. (I lived here in 2010.) It has been bad news for some of the lower places in Riberas. A friend had his house flooded. The septic system ...not good on that occasion.

  48. mudgirl, you are trying to change the way things work here by sheer force of will. "Standard"? Maybe up north. Not here. Have you ever seen the 2" plastic sewage pipes down by the lake in Ajijic? The ones that service the whole area? That used to come up during heavy rains? This discussion has been had many times before, and before long this thread will be 5 pages long no matter what anyone says. So, here is my current thinking: do whatever the hell you want with your TP, people, and we shall see who pays the consequences. Just don't come crawling back here when you have to pay big repair bills for your septic, or your neighbour starts to complain about the smell. Let loose the dogs.
