      Though the first men crossed the Bering Strait to the Americas about 20,000 years ago, they remained nomadic hunter-gatherers for millennia. It was not until they began farming and domesticating food animals that urbanized life became possible. Only then could permanent settlements become practical. Now that men no longer had to spend all their time to fill their bellies, they had the leisure to develop a social life and the arts and crafts of true civilization.
